Abstract

The era of modernization and digitalization has brought many changes in people's lives, especially for Generation Z, who grew up in the internet era and have a fairly intense attachment to social media use. With a fairly high intensity, this condition has given rise to a psychological phenomenon commonly called Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) where people tend to have the urge to always monitor social media to stay informed and follow popular trends. The purpose of this study was to analyze FOMO behavior towards Gen Z active social media users, especially on TikTok and Instagram platforms, from the perspective of the hadith about Qana'ah or a sense of sufficiency for what is owned. Researchers used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to generate data from experiences and phenomena that occur in the surrounding environment. Participants in this study were active users of TikTok and Instagram social media, especially among Generation Z (Gen Z) to explore the behavior of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). The results of this study indicate that a large number of active social media users experience this phenomenon with the emergence of social comparisons resulting from the intensity of social media use, from comparing their achievements, appearance, and lifestyle with others. The condition of the phenomena in this environment is very relevant to the concept of the hadith qana'ah which emphasizes the importance of self-control so as not to be trapped in a feeling of dissatisfaction with what one already has.
